Mixed feelings
It is so hard to put your work in the hands of others for workshop. I use a lot of lies and secrets in my poetry. Everytime I read outloud I have mixed emotions. I am always afraid that no one will understand what I am trying to say in my poem or that everyone will understand me, thus figuring out the secrets that I put in my poem! It is one of the most thrilling/scary things ever!

I completely feel your pain. I had forgotten about the whole reading my poem out loud thing, until now. I think that even though this is scary for all of us, it will only help us to be more confident and stronger people and writers. I really liked your poem by the way.
ReplyDeleteI can sympathize with people not understanding the ideas behind a poem. The first poem I submitted was done with free association. I thought that it was clear for the most part what was going on, but apparently other people didn't agree with me. Putting my poetry up like that and having different perspectives than my own look at the poem really provides a lot of invaluable ideas.
ReplyDeleteI feel the exact same way. Especially in today's workshop I felt like I needed to write a detailed autobiography about my life to understand the poem. After reading it out loud and getting the response in workshop I saw that no matter what, your personal connection will never make it through to some readers. Being so emotionally attached to my poem, it was nice to not feel so personally exposed because the readers don't have that view.
ReplyDeleteWhen in work shop I totally understand what your poem was saying the other day!! I really liked it!! I totally know the feeling, people don't always understand what i am trying to say in my works. it does get frustrating!
