Poetry About Lake Ontario: Thoughts on Inspiration Derived from Our Surroundings

I just wanted to remember one of the workshops we attended recently. It was 8am, and everyone was only half awake and under caffeinated. Yet, as we began to listen to or read the poems presented, I found that many of them had imagery of and drew inspiration from Lake Ontario.
I think this is significant, because this proves local surroundings have a profound affect on the muse. The Lake, which I agree is a source of inspiration for me as well, is local. It's easy to see; passing to and from class, we can view it. Some of us go down there and sit by the waves on the rocky shore for almost no reason.
It ends up in our poetry, even in the most subtle ways. One of my poems about dealing with a lack of inspiration used a comparison to the Lake, for example.
I'm thinking that maybe our surroundings affect us more than we know. It's like a sort of subconcious we can all tap into. Even if, in daily life, we wouldn't stop to smell the flowers...somehow the "flowers" just end up in our creative writing and poetry -- Lake Ontario is just one example.

  1. I agree one hundred percent! I always end up writing about the lake and our surroundings in Oswego in general. It seems odd that a lot of us do base our work and writings off of the same thing, but it is the easiest thing out there to focus and think about. Thank goodness for the lake! I wouldn't know what else to write about!
